Public Health Crisis: What can we do?

For those who don’t know, I began my college career at Xavier University of New Orleans. However, due to Katrina and personal reasons, I decided to transfer to Tennessee State University. I still have a great love for New Orleans and keep up with what is going on in the rebuilding of the city.

This article addresses one of the major public health issues as a result of Katrina’s aftermath. As an emerging leader in the realm of public health, I take responsibility in educating the public about the problems we face and starting a dialogue to discuss what can be done. Take a moment to read the article and give me your feedback.

What has public health done for you lately?

So you still may be wondering: What is public health??

Watch this short video to get a better idea. Then after watching the video take a walk around your neighbor and snap a picture of what you think is public health and I’ll send you a sticker! Be on the lookout for my own “This is Public Health” series.

Happy Hunting!!

Reflections from AAR

Attending AAR was a once in a lifetime experience. I wasn’t really sure what to expect among religious academic professors. However, they were very receptive to the hopeandhealing.org website and the idea of health ministries. Of course not only professors were present, but students of religious studies, chaplains, and pastors. There seems to be much interest in this area of faith and health, even a lot written about the connection, but less action. However, being among a small group of people who actually believe that the two are very interwined is bitter sweet.

I want to see leaps and bounds made in this area, just as they have been made in our views of democracy, medicine, and the likes. There is so much work to be done and stigmas to be broken down. It is not about what you believe, but rather that you believe at all. It is not about who is responsible for your living, but rather that you are at all living. And it is not about why you are healthy, but rather that you have health.

Election DAY

As many of you know, tomorrow is a very important day in our history. While I will not talk about my own political views, I do hope that you will go out and vote. I also hope that you will go as a informed voter. As a public health student, I wanted to share a  website that talks about the health facts. GO and MAKE HISTORY!!!

As a graduate student in Social Health Behavior, I'm learning more and more about the connections between faith and health.
